Overview

Andrea Parrot Ph.D. is a Professor in the Department of Policy Analysis and Management at Cornell University, where she has been teaching since 1981.  She teaches courses in Contemporary Issues in Women's Health, Human Sexuality, the Global Perspective on Violence Against Women, Reproductive Health Policy, and Medical Ethics. Her research interests have revolved around women's health issues, sexual assault, infertility, and cross cultural women's health and violence against women. She earned her MS at SUNY Albany, and did additional graduate work at Union College and Syracuse University; and she earned her Ph.D. from Cornell.    Dr. Parrot's work has resulted in her making numerous radio and television appearances, including Face the Nation, Oprah, Larry King Live, The Christian Broadcasting Company, and Good Morning America.  She has been an award winning college professor, and a consultant to the Department of Justice and numerous law enforcement agencies where she has been an expert witness on sexual assault cases.  In 2000, Dr Parrot was awarded the Richard Cross award for Outstanding Contributions to Sexual Education from the Robert Wood Johnson School of Medicine.  For 30 years she has also held an adjunct appointment as a Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at Upstate Medical University in Syracuse, where she has taught human sexuality to medical students.  She has made hundreds of presentations on sexual assault prevention on college campuses through the country.  She has also traveled to more than 35 countries doing research on human sexuality and women’s issues, and she has taught on six semesters on Semester at Sea voyages (around the world in 2001,  2012, and 2014; to Asia in the summer of  2006; to the Mediterranean in the summer of 2009; and to Scandinavia during the summer of 2014).  She is also the author of many books, manuals, and articles on sexual assault.  Her most recent books, co-authored with Nina Cummings, are Forsaken Females: The Global Brutalization of Women (2006) published by Rowman and Littlefield, and The Sexual Enslavement of Girls and Women Worldwide (2008) published by Praeger.

Research Focus

Andrea Parrot is currently researching women's issues cross culturally, in particular the impact of HIV/AIDS policies on women, women's rights, and violence against women.  She is also doing research on women's rights and issues in Afghanistan.
